Based on Liane Moriarty’s 2014 novel, Big little lies debuted to critical acclaim and won three Emmy Awards as of this writing. Originally billed as a limited series, the series’ massive success resulted in a Season 2 renewal. Now, the team behind the Max drama “will be bringing in a third,” according to executive producer Nicole Kidman.
Speaking at the CME Group Tour Championship Q&A event (via E! News), Kidman — who also starred in the series as Celeste Wright — shared that the opportunity to executive produce the series s ‘is presented at a time when she was already considering retirement.
“I loved Big Little Lies because it happened at a time in my life where I had my kids, and I thought I was going to retire, and then this situation happened, where Reese Witherspoon and I was able to produce that’s how it is. And then you all watched it and made it a huge success,” the actress said, teasing: “We’ll give you a third one, just for your information.”
Although Kidman has previously spoken about the exciting future of Big Little Lies, Max has yet to confirm his announcement. This was also a surprise to fans of the show given previous comments from the cast presumably confirming that season 3 of Big Little Lies definitely wouldn’t happen.
Zoë Kravitz, who played Bonnie Carlson on the series, said in an interview with GQ that the series was over following the death of season 1 director Jean-Marc Vallée in 2021.
“We talked a lot about doing a season three. Unfortunately, Jean-Marc Vallée, our incredible director, passed away last year. It’s heartbreaking. I can’t imagine going on without him. He was truly the visionary of this series. Unfortunately, it’s done,” Kravitz told GQ.
