Just when you thought The Karate Kid universe I couldn’t get any bigger, that’s just the case. The star of the original franchise as well as Cobra Kai, Ralph Macchio, teamed up with action movie legend and star of the 2010 film The Karate Kid redo, Jackie Chan, for a brand new The Karate Kid movie.
News of the new the film flopped last year but at the time, we didn’t know exactly what it was. All Sony was saying was that it took place in the same universe as Cobra Kai and original films. Now we know it will take place in this universe, And also introduce the universe of the 2010 film, starring Jaden Smith, into the story.
Macchio and Chan announced the news in the video below, which also reveals that there is an open casting call for who will play the main character. Check it out.
This new The Karate Kid will be released in theaters on December 13, 2024, directed by Jonathan Entwistle (The end of the fucking world) and written by Rob Lieber (Peter Rabbit). There are no details on the exact plot, but you can start to put the pieces together if Chan’s Mr. Han, a new type of Mr. Miyagi, meets Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso, himself a karate sensei .
The timing of the film will definitely come after the sixth and final season of Cobra Kai also, which is currently in development. Although this is just a hypothesis.
To be honest here, for a long time The Karate Kid fan, I don’t like this news. The 2010 film is so different from anything the team behind Cobra Kai did to inject more popularity into the franchise. Are these guys really involved? They know and understand The Karate Kid better than anyone. (We’ve reached out to Sony and will update this article if we receive a response.) And of course, you can never go wrong with Jackie Chan, but we’ll have to learn a lot more to see what makes this theater worthy. What do you think?
