The Zellner brothers’ film “Sasquatch Sunset” follows a “year in the life of a singular family” of Sasquatch, according to the official newspaper. Keough, Eisenberg, co-director Nathan Zellner and Christophe Zajac-Denek make up the family of mythical creatures.
Directed by directing duo David and Nathan Zellner and written by David Zellner, “Sasquatch Sunset” is an entirely wordless film, aside from the grunts and moans of the titular creatures. The feature film debuted at Sundance 2024 and will be distributed by Bleecker Street with a release date to follow.
Actor and producer Eisenberg previously starred opposite David Zellner in Riley Stearns’ “The Art of Self-Defense,” produced by Nathan Zellner. Eisenberg told Variety in August 2022 that the Zellner brothers are “brilliant directors that I’ve wanted to work with for a long time.”
Eisenberg later told IndieWire at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival that the screenplay for “Sasquatch Sunset” was “one of the five best screenplays I’ve read in my life.”
The “Social Network” star continued: “It’s so brilliant, very unusual, probably impossible, to realize the premise and then fill it with the funniest, sweetest, most touching, almost human story . This transcends the fact that these characters aren’t human and yet it still feels relevant.
The actors behind “Sasquatch Sunset” embarked on a “boot camp” to learn how to have a “heavy” gait like a Sasquatch would. The cast wore full prosthetics and fur to resemble the mythical creatures. Actor Zajac-Denek said during the IndieWire studio at Sundance, presented by Dropbox, that the Zellners wanted a “real representation of these creatures in their environment” with moving performances.
The Zellner brothers have long been fascinated with Bigfoot and released the Sundance award-winning short film “Sasquatch Birth Journal 2” in 2010. “Sasquatch Sunset” is a production of Square Peg, ZBI and The Space Program and produced by Lars Knudsen, Tyler Campellone. , Nathan Zellner, David Zellner, George Rush, Jesse Eisenberg and David Harari, with “Beau Is Afraid” director Ari Aster serving as executive producer alongside Riley Keough and Gina Gammell under their Felix Culpa banner.
