What do we know about the new Karate Kid movie?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming, as-yet-untitled Karate Kid film is being directed by The End of the F***ing World’s Jonathan Entwistle. Rob Lieber provides the screenplay, while Karen Rosenfelt produces the film.

Not much is known about the plot of the new Karate Kid; however, it would be set on the East Coast and focus on a Chinese teenager.

Macchio made his debut as Daniel LaRusso in The Karate Kid in 1984, directed by Robert Mark Kamen and also starring Pat Morita, William Zabka and Elisabeth Shue. He returned for two sequels, 1986’s The Karate Kid Part II and 1989’s The Karate Kid Part III, as well as the sequel to the Netflix television series, Cobra Kai.

Chan, meanwhile, starred as Mr. Han in the 2010 remake of The Karate Kid, directed by Harald Zwart and starring Jaden Smith as Dre Parker.

Sony Pictures Entertainment’s video confirms that Macchio will play Daniel LaRusso and Chan will play Mr. Han in the upcoming film. It’s not immediately clear whether the new film will replay the events of Cobra Kai or feature any of the characters introduced in the Netflix series. Having been renewed for one final season in January 2023, Cobra Kai season 6 does not yet have a release date as production was delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

The new Karate Kid movie currently has a release date of December 13, 2024. For more details on the overall casting search, click here.
